As Manchester United wait to be given the green light to appoint Dan Ashworth as their new technical director, manager Erik ten Hag has been answering a range of questions connected to the media comments Sir Jim Ratcliffe made to the BBC's Dan Roan and others on Wednesday.

One was specifically related to United's recruitment plans and Ten Hag's previous comments from his time at Ajax relating to the central part any manager must play in deciding on transfer targets.

From the conversations he has already had with Ratcliffe and Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, Ten Hag does not envisage a problem.

"It is about control," said Ten Hag. "And I have already had the talks with them about it. They will not bring in players who the manager doesn’t want, because that will not work.

"We will work there together, with suggestions, bringing players in and discussing. Then it is about picking the right players, it is about cooperation and togetherness.

"That is the way they want to work."

  3. Bournemouth v Man City: Sutton's predictionspublished at 14:03 24 February

    Sutton's predictions

BBC pundit Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on former England striker Jermain Defoe.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3

Manchester City were a bit ugly in their win over Brentford on Tuesday, but they got the job done in the end.

I can see something similar happening here, with City having to fight for it but finding a way to win.

Bournemouth have not won since Boxing Day, but they were unlucky not to beat Newcastle last week and they don't appear to be in any relegation danger.

I can see them scoring against City, but they won't have anything else to celebrate.

    Jermain's prediction: 1-3

  4. Man Utd v Fulham: Sutton's predictionspublished at 14:02 24 February

    Sutton's predictions

BBC pundit Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on former England striker Jermain Defoe.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Manchester United keep on winning - Sunday's success at Luton was their fifth in a row in all competitions - and I'm pleased to see Rasmus Hojlund has carried on scoring too.

Fulham were very unlucky to lose to United at Craven Cottage in November, but their away form is not the best. They have only won once away in the league all season, against Everton on the opening weekend.

I don't think this will be easy for United, because Fulham are a dangerous counter-attacking team, but Erik ten Hag's team are playing with more freedom at the moment, which is why I think they will win.

    Jermain's prediction: 2-1

Rasmus Hojlund's untimely injury is likely to mean another chance for underperforming wide-man Antony.

The Brazilian is the second most expensive player in Manchester United history.

However, he has looked a long way short of his £82m valuation, amid suggestions the club only thought he was worth £25m when they analysed Antony during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time as manager.

The 23-year-old has scored one goal in 25 appearances so far this season. He has only featured for 21 minutes in three substitute outings in the Premier League since starting the 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on 30 December.

Ten Hag knows the former Ajax man has to do more. "He has to prove a point, but he will do," Ten Hag said. "He has big potential but he hasn't shown it lately.

"I know what his talent is. It is about proving his talent. It is about him.

"He will probably get his opportunities. But that was always the idea, you have competition. Now he has to show himself on the training pitch."

Manchester United will face Premier League title contenders Arsenal and Liverpool during their pre-season tour of the United States this summer.

United will play Arsenal at the state-of-the art So-Fi stadium in Los Angeles on 27 July.

They will also take on old rivals Liverpool at the 77,500-capacity William Brice Stadium in South Carolina on 3 August.

Liverpool have confirmed they will also play Arsenal in Philadelphia on 31 July.

With the Premier League start date already confirmed as 17 August, the pre-season Community Shield is likely to be played at Wembley a week earlier.

  7. Guardiola on De Bruyne, Bournemouth and Ratcliffe's admirationpublished at 14:11 23 February

    BBC Sport journalist

Pep Guardiola has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Bournemouth.

Here are the key lines from the Manchester City boss:

    • Kevin de Bruyne "is not injured" and is likely to travel with the team to Bournemouth. The captain will be assessed later this afternoon to see what his involvement in that game will be.

    • On the decision to rest him against Brentford: "I think we took a good decision to not take a risk. I knew people would say why didn’t he play but he didn’t feel comfortable."

    • He said Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol remain out with their respective muscle and ankle injuries "but are getting closer".

    • On opponents Bournemouth: "It's always a difficult game with the way they play. They're completely alive, aggressive and well organised. They’re a really good team. It’s a really tough game tomorrow."

    • He praised Cherries boss Andoni Iraola's style that gets "incredible results" and added striker Dominic Solanke is "doing really well and scoring a lot of goals".

    • Reflecting on Sir Jim Ratcliffe's takeover of rivals Manchester United: "It’s not about being worried. I’m pretty sure with Ratcliffe, United will make a step forward."

    • On Ratcliffe's admiration for what City have achieved: "It’s the truth! Teams admit it, they want to be closer to us and you can’t deny the reality."

    • He said he "expected" United to be close challengers when he joined the club in 2016 but "that hasn't happened," adding: "What I want is Man City to be there, the rest I don’t care. It’s been Liverpool in many years and since I arrived on day one I’ve expected United being there for the story and tradition. It hasn’t happened, they know why, but it’s there business and not ours."

    • He said the club are "delighted" with Oscar Bobb's season so far and hopes "he can still be with us for many, many years". The 20-year-old is currently undergoing new contract talks with the club.

  8. Ten Hag on Hojlund, alignment with Ratcliffe and Champions League ambitionspublished at 14:06 23 February

    Simon Stone
    Chief football news reporter

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Fulham at Old Trafford.

Here are the main lines from his news conference:

    • On Rasmus Hojlund's injury, which means he will miss next weekend's Manchester derby: "It's a small injury, two to three weeks. That is the risk playing of high intensity training. It's not a big injury but he has to wait now for two or three weeks."

    • On the impact of injuries to United's season, with Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez among those also out: "It is an issue. But other clubs have this and we have to deal with it."

    • On working with Sir Jim Ratcliffe: "We speak a lot. There are many conversations with him, with (Ineos head of sport) Dave Brailsford about this club, about this team, about the structures. We are very aligned. It totally fits with the ambitions I have and the ambitions I had when I came in. I'm 19 months in and I see we are going in the right direction."

    • On if he feels Ratcliffe thinks he is the right man to deliver Ineos' ambitions for the club: "Absolutely I had that feeling. We have so many talks, we are very aligned, we have the same ambition, we are very aligned in the process."

    • On trying to qualify for the Champions League: "We belong there and we believe but we have to prove it."
